Twenty-Five Years of Teddy Bears

By | Teddy Highlight | No Comments

In the tiny town of Tambo located in the middle of the Outback local women have been crafting sheepskin teddy bears for the past twenty-five years. Following a Government workshop to uncover new industries in regional communities, three women got together and decided to form a teddy bear company. After nearly a year of extensive planning, designing, trial and error the first bears were ready for market in 1993. The final design or ‘prototype’ is proudly displayed in store while the first bear to be sold, auspiciously named ‘MacFarlane Mary’ and numbered 1 on her bum tag, was purchased by…

Naming of the Ace Reporter Teddy Bear

By | Teddy Highlight | No Comments
Editor of the Longreach Leader, Noni Rutherford recently engaged the services of a new staff member, a talented teddy bear trained as an ace reporter, perfect for the job. The Leader is a great regional newspaper that provides a fantastic service to the Longreach, Winton, Barcaldine, Blackall-Tambo, Diamantina and Barcoo Shires, reporting on local and regional events, news and activities. Hailed as the Independent Voice of Central West Queensland the Leader has been reporting across the west since 1923. As a journalist, the bear has a number of advantages, he doesn't need any wages, doesn't take holidays, will work weekends and is pretty cheap to feed,...

Tambo Teddies take on China!

By | Behind The Scenes, Teddy Highlight | No Comments

Ever since we purchased the business we have been talking about going global……and last week we took the first solid steps along this path.   It may seem that 3 years is a long time to get our act together but we really wanted to make sure we undertook this project with as little risk as possible. So rather than just dropping into China and announcing Tambo Teddies have arrived! we engaged the services of an experienced consultant, Ben Ferguson, and we were very thankful that we did. Tammy and Alison flew into Guangzhou to spend a week at the…

Tambo Teddy Bear Collector – Our Local Arctophile!

By | Teddy Highlight, Teddy Memories | No Comments

Tambo’s own teddy bear collector, Mardi Noonan began her collection of Tambo Teddies in 1997 when she purchased her first bear called Bessie. There are two Tambo Teddy bear families and Bessie was a very early member of the Toby bear family, number 2301. Created from a short grey wool pelt, Bessie with her very squashed-in face appealed and Mardi’s bear collection began.       Claiming not to be a crazy person, Mardi tries not to collect things but when the former owner of Tambo Teddies began creating  limited edition bears and each design was named after a different…

Celebrating Three Years at Tambo Teddies

By | Teddy Highlight | No Comments

This month we are celebrating a significant milestone since we purchased Tambo Teddies- we are celebrating our third birthday!   When we reflect on the past three years we are amazed at how much we have achieved; there have been a lot of challenges but also loads of fun. We have had a lot of laughs, wondered what we had taken on and experienced a few ‘what on earth are we doing?’ moments but overall we’ve enjoyed the adventure and are really proud of what we have delivered.   We have renovated the workshop, created a sophisticated online store, established our social media presence, won a national…

An Ode to Tambo’s Teddy Bears

By | Teddy Highlight, Teddy Memories | No Comments

We found this charming poem in our files……. don’t know who wrote it but we love it just the same! The drought has spread her blankets wide, with eyes blood red and flaring. Through a string of tiny country towns the mood was bleak, despairing. And in retreat to a steady beat, their dusty rifles crack. As one by one like dominoes, they fell on the drought’s broad track.   But one small town stood up to fight, took thought beyond the square, Three women from the township vowed,……. to build a teddy bear. With grit and pluck we’ll bring…

Western Queensland Drought Bears

By | Teddy Highlight | No Comments
Western Queensland has been suffering from an extended drought and many generous people from across the country have dug deep and kindly donated to the Western Queensland Drought Appeal Committee. The Committee are all unpaid volunteers who formed an organisation following a drought aid public forum held in Longreach in April 2015. The executive and management  team were elected and the Western Queensland  Drought Appeal was born. The management  committee has representatives from local community groups, churches, mental health organisations, finance, business and service clubs. Members all live in western Queensland  because they love it - the sense of community, the vast open spaces, the fresh...
