Every year on 11 July, Australia recognises Cheer Up the Lonely Day, an unofficial day that encourages us to pause, look around and reach out to someone who may be feeling lonely. The day was created by Francisco Rivera from Indiana, USA, in memory of his uncle, who struggled with loneliness after losing his wife. Rivera believed that a simple visit, a kind word or a thoughtful gesture could brighten someone’s day. Today, the message remains just as powerful: nobody should feel forgotten.

Sadly, loneliness is becoming increasingly common. The World Health Organization (WHO) now recognises loneliness as a growing global issue, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Research has shown that prolonged social isolation doesn’t just affect emotional wellbeing—it can have a serious impact on physical health, with some studies suggesting its effects are comparable to well-known health risks such as smoking or obesity.

The encouraging news is that it doesn’t take a grand gesture to make someone feel valued. A handwritten card, a warm hug, a phone call, sharing a cup of tea or simply taking the time for a conversation can lift someone’s spirits and remind them that they matter.
