Planning a trip out west? Make Tambo a destination! There’s plenty to see and do, and Tambo Ted is ready to show you around.
- Relax by Tambo’s Beautiful Dam
Our scenic Tambo Dam is the perfect picnic spot! Pull up on the lush lawn or under the gazebo and soak in the peaceful views. Feeling energetic? Stretch your legs on the outdoor gym circuit or take a leisurely stroll along the dam bank. For nature lovers, head to the Bird Hide on the far side and quietly observe Tambo’s feathered residents in their natural habitat.
2. Explore the Coolibah Walk & Local History
Take a walk along the Coolibah Walk, which winds alongside the Barcoo River and loops back into town. Along the way, you’ll discover native flora and can take a sidetrack to the historic Qantas plane crash site. In 1927, a Qantas mail plane crashed on the town common, and you can visit the graves of those lost at the Tambo Cemetery to learn more about this chapter of the town’s history.
3. Step Back in Time on Tambo’s Heritage Walk
Grab a Heritage Walk booklet and explore Tambo’s fascinating past. Along the way, stop at the Grassland Art Gallery, a contemporary space featuring stunning local and touring exhibitions. Browse a range of handcrafted gifts—perfect souvenirs to remember your trip.
4. Uncover History at the Heritage Precinct
Visit the Heritage Precinct, housed in the town’s original Post and Telegraph Buildings. Try your hand at Morse code, explore touchscreens filled with Tambo’s unique stories, and learn more about the sheep and wool industry. Looking for a great read? Pick up a second-hand book from the selection available.
5. Stop by the Visitor Information Centre & Library
Across the road, the Visitor Information Centre is located in the heritage-listed Court House. The friendly team is happy to help you find the best places to stay, from comfortable caravan parks to free camping at Stubby Bend, for those who love being close to nature.
6. Ben’s Chicken Races – A Must-See!
If you’re staying at Stubby Bend, keep an eye out for the little bus that shuttles visitors into town for the famous Ben’s Chicken Races.
