Koalas – Teddy Bear Royalty

Koalas might not be Bears – but they are definitely Teddy Bear Royalty

Koalas are one of Queensland’s most loved locals, instantly recognisable, endlessly huggable (from a distance!), and proudly Aussie. And while we all know the classic fun fact that koalas aren’t actually bears, at Tambo Teddies we like to say: they may not be bears, but they are most definitely Tambo Teddy Bear Koalas.

Queensland is a vital stronghold for koalas, with vast eucalyptus forests that provide both food and shelter for these sleepy marsupials. Koalas play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, and their wellbeing is often seen as a sign of the overall health of our natural environment. That’s why Queenslanders hold them so close to their hearts and protecting koalas means protecting the land we love.

Recognised internationally as one of Australia’s most iconic animals, koalas are true global superstars. From tourists snapping selfies to conservation campaigns worldwide, their fluffy ears and calm nature have become symbols of Australia itself. It’s no surprise that the koala is proudly recognised as Queensland’s official faunal emblem, a title that celebrates not only their cuteness, but their importance to our state’s identity.

Koalas are also marsupials, a fascinating group of mammals unique to places like Australia. Carrying their joeys in pouches, they represent resilience, adaptability, and the wonderfully weird side of our wildlife. These traits make them the perfect inspiration for keepsakes that celebrate Queensland spirit.

That’s exactly why the Blackall–Tambo Regional Council (BTRC) has chosen custom-made Tambo Teddy Bear Koalas for the 2026 Australia Day Awards. These special keepsakes honour locals who make a lasting difference, people our very own like Tammy Johnson, the 2024 Tambo Citizen of the Year, whose dedication and generosity embody the very spirit of the region. Just like our koalas, these citizens are one of a kind, deeply rooted in place, and worthy of celebration.

Looking ahead to the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, Tambo Teddy Bear Koalas would make the ultimate welcome gift for visiting athletes. Thoughtful, lightweight, and unmistakably Australian, they offer more than a souvenir, they offer a story. A story of Queensland, of craftsmanship, and of a state that greets the world with warmth and a smile.

So yes, koalas aren’t bears but when they’re handmade with love in regional Queensland, they become something even better: Tambo Teddy Bear Koalas, ready to charm locals, legends, royalty and Olympians alike.
